Many Devils fans viewed Volchenkov as a top prize in the 2010 Free Agent Frenzy. He's a stay-at-home defenseman that
wasn't afraid to get physical in front of his own net, could block shots (I saw that he used to be a goalie. So that's why he's so
good at that.), and not draw an assload of interference penalties in doing so.

All 3 areas happened to be needs for the Devils, by a mere coincidence.

The departure of Paul Martin to the Penguins opened the door to bring him in.
