Stewart had not had a great deal of luck during his professional career. Sure, he got to play regularly in both Maine and Utica,
but he struggled to crack the lineup in New Jersey for good.
He probably could have made the team in 87-88, but he suffered a hernia injury during training camp that required surgery.
And maybe in 89-90, as well, but he broke his leg when his skate caught a rut on the ice and missed the entire season, save a
couple games in Utica.
Throughout, he was also struggling with alcoholism. It lead him to retire a couple weeks after he was traded to the Bruins.
He got another chance with the Moncton Hawks, the Winnipeg Jets' AHL farm team, for the 92-93 season before retiring again
for good.
