While born in New York, Pratt actually grew up in Vancouver, where he learned to play hockey, and in a way only the western
Canadians could: tough and rugged. His father, Babe Pratt, was the same way when he played: a tough-playing stay-at-home
defenseman.
It took a while for the younger Pratt to break into the NHL, playing in the minors until the NHL expanded from 6 to 12 in 1967.
He only played 34 games with the Oakland Seals, the team that claimed him, and he never stayed with one team for very long;
his longest stay was with the Buffalo Sabres for 3 1/2 seasons.
The reason for all the outcasting: he was often viewed as expendable. Even in Denver.
76-77 was indeed the last season he would play, and he retired as a Leaf.
