Up until 07-08, Mottau had been a career minor leaguer. Opportunity presented itself when Colin White was down with his eye
injury, though. (Oddly enough, they would eventually become regular defense partners.)
He does have some offensive skills (He WAS a Hobey Baker winner back at BC.), but his defensive play leaves a lot to be
desired. And it showed frequently during the year.
He did have one stretch at midseason where everything was clicking for him. I'll give him that, even if nobody else will. In fact,
he does maintain some good play with the puck.
In the end, there are a lot of Devils fans that won't ever like Mottau. "It's too close!"
