Although Messier was born in England, his family moved to near Edmonton and that's where he got his start playing the game.
He had two seasons of college hockey at the University of Denver under his belt when the Rockies drafted him. He did get a
free look from the Rockies for the 9 games, but at the conclusion of that, was assigned to the AHL. He didn't finish the season
there. He would be relegated to the Tulsa Oilers of the CHL, and would proceed to move from team to team in that league for a
few seasons.
He would play in the AHL again for 2 seasons before Germany came beckoning. He was a star for Mannheim for 6 seasons
there before finishing his career in Italy.
Before you ask about his name and being from Edmonton... Yes. He's Mark Messier's older brother.
And speaking of Mark, Paul is currently running one of his investments, a small hotel in the Bahamas.
Entry Draft: 1978 Third Round Pick (41st overall) by the Colorado Rockies
