By today's standards, Gruen would be a third line forward... I would say in a similar style to David Clarkson, but without the
fighting. Yep, I mean a battler in front, along the boards, and capable of scoring 20 goals.
He played a few games with the Detroit Red Wings before joining the WHA. In each season, though, he was on a different team.
He jumped back to the NHL with the Rockies after his rights were traded to them by the Red Wings. At the time, he was a
Calgary Cowboy.
And he contributed quite positively with the Rockies, too, before he departed back to the Red Wings' organization.
He retired for the first time in 1980. He would make a comeback in 1982 with a senior league team in Thunder Bay, playing for
the Twins for 3 seasons before retiring for good.
Entry Draft: 1972 Fourth Round Pick (58th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings
