After Gardiner was drafted, he opted to play college hockey at Colgate for 4 years, getting better each year until he graduated.
He joined the Blues' top farm team, the Peoria Rivermen, after his senior season was finished to play 3 games. The Blues
relinquished Gardiner's rights, and he would sign on with the Ottawa Senators. He took on a defensive role both while in
Ottawa and while playing for the PEI Sens, their AHL team. Later on in his tenure, he was used mainly as a spare forward.
That would continue wherever else he moved on to, and that would be a lot of movement in such a short time. And while with
the Devils, he saw more games in Albany (45) than he did in New Jersey (7).
He followed that with a season in Russia, then a season in Finland. He played one more season in North America in 04-05, with
the Adirondack Frostbite of the United Hockey League, before retiring.
