Even though he was a late-round draftee, Eckford was a high prospect for the Devils on the backline. In fact, for a while, he
was ranked as #2 behind Matt Corrente. He has all the skill to be the top offensive man back there, the quarterback. (He's
actually a converted forward, I found out.)

What really jumped his play while at Alaska-Fairbanks was bulking up, enabling the physical part of his game to come through.
As a pro, though, that aspect wasn't as noticeable.

He did struggle at times during his first pro season in Lowell in 08-09, but still put up 25 assists in 72 games for them. His
second season, though, he was on fire in the first month of the AHL season, also earning himself AHL Player of the Week
honors. It was enough for him to get a call-up to New Jersey when injuries became prominent.

Not to mention see some game action, having held his own at best.

That's probably why he was allowed to sign with the Coyotes' organization: he didn't raise his game enough.
