Blomqvist was skilled as a playmaker, but he also had an edge to his game. By edge, I do mean a physical edge. He became
expendable, though, when the Caps had built their defense to become one of the deepest corps in the league at the time, which
opened the door for him to sign with the Devils.
That season was pretty tumultuous for him, though. He suffered one injury after another after another. I don't know if that
prompted him to return to Europe or what happened with that, but that's what he did after the season: went to play in Sweden.
He would continue to play in some of the elite European leagues until he retired in 1998.
He also was an assistant coach for HIFK Helsinki during the 98-99 season.
Currently, he is with the Devils as part of the scouting department.
