Ashby had trouble staying with the NHL; the Leafs kept sending him down to the minors during the season in each of his first 3
seasons. The fourth season: he opted to retire instead.
Then the trade to the Rockies happened, and he came back to play. Still, he only played a handful of games with the parent
club. He did have a good season with Fort Worth his only season there, scoring 54 points. He didn't finish the season there,
though; the trade to the Oilers happened.
He was part of the Wichita Wind team that went to the Adams Cup finals in 1981. A few days after the finals were over, he was
involved in a head-on car crash in Summerland, B.C. He would pass away a few hours later in the hospital in Kelowna.
The CHL had renamed its Iron Man Award the following season in tribute to him.
