Masterton Memorial
Trophy
As defined by the NHL, this trophy is awarded to "the player who best exemplifies the
qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey." Along with the
award, a grant is given from the PHWA in the name of the winner of the award to the Bill
Masteron Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minnesota.

History of the trophy: The Masterton trophy was presented to the NHL under a
trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers Association to commemorate the late Bill
Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who has exhibited the qualities
described above, and died on January 15, 1968 after an injury he sustained during a
game.
