| Masterton Memorial Trophy |
| As defined by the NHL, this trophy is awarded to "the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey." Along with the award, a grant is given from the PHWA in the name of the winner of the award to the Bill Masteron Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minnesota. History of the trophy: The Masterton trophy was presented to the NHL under a trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers Association to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who has exhibited the qualities described above, and died on January 15, 1968 after an injury he sustained during a game. |
